SYSU Undergraduate Medical Teaching Contest 2013 held on North Campus

The Undergraduate Medical Teaching Contest, in both Putonghua and English, was held on North Campus on November 21, 2013. Selected competitors from SYSU medical schools and clinical departments of the affiliated hospitals, 36 in total, competed for teaching excellence in two groups while some 350 teachers and students watched on the spot in Room 101 and 201 of the Teaching Building.

Prof. Xiao Haipeng, director of the Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs, presided over the opening ceremony. Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU, delivered a keynote speech. Li enthusiastically affirmed the positive influence of the contests on the teaching quality of undergraduate medical courses over the years, and encouraged the participants to continue their outstanding contest performance in everyday teaching so as to extend the influence even further. He also called on all faculties and hospital departments to promote the competition gains.

The separate Putonghua and English teaching competition sessions were coordinated by Ms. Zhou Huiming, Ms. Wang Shuzhen and Mr. Wang Jinsong, the deputy directors of the Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs. 22 experts and 20 senior students from various medical faculties acted as judges to assess the contestant's lesson plans and on-site demonstrations. The intense contest lasted for a whole day. Finally two contestants in each group won the 1st prize, four were awarded second prize, six the third prize. Fang Jiafeng from The Third Affiliated Hospital and Li Jiaoxing from The First Affiliated Hospital won the first prize in Putonghua teaching contest, Hou Xun from The First Affiliated Hospital and Zhou Zhongguo from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center won the first prize in English teaching contest.

At the prize presentation and closing ceremony of the contest, experts including Prof. Wang Tinghuai, National Distinguished Teacher and Deputy Dean of Faculty of Medical Sciences, Prof. Tang Meian, leader of the expert team for the contest, and Prof. Yang Niansheng, shared their pertinent comments on the contestants’ performance. Student judges reviewed the contest from their perspectives and put forward some suggestions.

Teaching exploration never ends. Teaching contests as above provide a good platform for professional improvement of the young medical teachers to implement the project of “dedication to teaching, students and learning” in SYSU; The Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs will take further measures to promote such efforts in enhancing basic teaching skills and innovative classroom teaching, the keys to successful medical education.
