2012 SYSU Clinical Faculty Teaching Skills Competition, the Sixth Clinical Skills Competition for Interns and 2012 SYSU Clinical Teaching Base Conference Successfully Held

The 2012 SYSU Clinical Faculty Teaching Skills Competition, the Sixth Clinical Skills Competition for Interns (hereinafter referred to as "the two competitions”) and 2012 SYSU Clinical Teaching Base Conference, hosted by the Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs and co-organized by the Clinical Skills Training Center, Network and Information Technology Center, and Zhongshan School of Medicine, were held on North Campus from January 9 to January 11, 2013.

Xu Ningsheng, President of Sun Yat-sen University; Wang Jianping, Executive Vice President; Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President; Li Mengfeng, Vice President; Yang Zhu, Assistant to the President; Zheng Wen, Director of the Higher Education Office of the Department of Education of Guagndong Province; Liu Wenping, Associate Investigator of the Higher Education Office of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Xu Qingfeng, Director of the Office of Science and Technology Education of the Health Department of Guangdong Province; Professor Chen Ruzhu, Former Vice President of SYSU; Professor Wang Tinghuai, Deputy Director of Faculty of Medical Sciences and National Distinguished Teacher; Xiao Haipeng, Director of the Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs; Wang Liantang, Zhou Huiming and Wang Shuzhen, Deputy Directors of the Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs; the vice presidents in charge of teaching from affiliated hospitals, non-directly affiliated hospitals and teaching hospitals; medical sciences supervisor teams and specialist teams attended the conference and made an inspection tour of the competition site and the broadcast site. Fifteen faculty teams from SYSU affiliated hospitals, non-directly affiliated hospitals and teaching hospitals took part in the Clinical Faculty Teaching Skills Competition and thirteen student teams took part in the Clinical Skills Competition for Interns. Teachers and administrative staff from thirteen universities and colleges nationwide, teachers and students from thirty-three SYSU teaching bases, and teacher representatives from hospitals across Guangdong Province, a total of over 1,100 people watched the competitions.

To make sure that the competitions would go on smoothly, the organizers specially invited Professor Chi Baorong, head of the expert group of the teaching steering committee of the Ministry of Education, as the special advisor; National Distinguished Teacher Professor Liang Lijian as the chief referee; medical sciences supervisors Professor Tang Meian, Professor Zhu Zhaohua and Professor Du Minlian as the vice chief referee; and over sixty professors from each affiliated hospital to form the specialist team. The two competitions separately arranged the competition site and watching site in SYSU; the comment team, which was composed of professors, gave comments and interacted with the teachers and students on the watching site. There was also a parallel session where the competitions were live broadcast and commented. Through synchronous broadcasting technology, the competitions became teaching activities, integrating information technology into the whole process of medical teaching and education.

Professor Chi Baorong fully affirmed SYSU’s achievement in undergraduate teaching and education at the opening ceremony. He said that the University leaders attached long-term importance to undergraduate teaching and advocated dedication to teaching, students and learning, the leaders on different levels in functional departments worked earnestly, and the University had a fine medical teaching tradition, all above contributed to its achievement in medical teaching and education.

President Xu Ningsheng inspected the watching site and competition site and emphasized the significance of clinical skills for doctors. He affirmed the principle and measures of the University to keep focusing on developing professional skills in clinical teaching. He hoped that the students could actively make use of the clinical teaching platform and facilities provided by the University and study hard to become excellent doctors.

Executive Vice President Wang Jianping said that in recent years the medical sciences carried forward the tradition of “Three Basics and Three Stricts”, actively established the “Three Earlies” medical education mode and took the “Three Competitions” as an important measure of cultivating outstanding doctors in the teaching reform. He emphasized that on the basis of our achievements the University should take the opportunity of the nation’s education plan for outstanding doctors, take aim at the weakest link in present education, make common progress with our sister universities and colleges, and create a brilliant future for medical education.

Vice President Li Mengfeng fully affirmed the University’s achievement in clinical teaching. He believed that the two competitions had become an important part of the University’s clinical teaching activity, and the success of the competitions was significant in facilitating clinical teaching and learning, and in promoting the quality of undergraduate teaching. He also suggested that the administrative departments should further standardize and institutionalize the two competitions, summarize the experience and use it in daily clinical teaching to enhance the teaching effect. The 2012 SYSU Clinical Teaching Hospital Working Conference and Commendation Conference and the closing ceremony of the two competitions were held on the afternoon of January 11. On behalf of the University, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng thanked the faculty and staff for their consistent participation and support for undergraduate teaching and conveyed greetings to the teachers and students who took part in and watched the competitions. He wished that the University’s teaching would flourish with a wealth of medical talents and he wished a happy new year to everyone. After the two-day fierce competition and strict review by the judges, the awards of 2012 SYSU Clinical Faculty Teaching Skills Competition and the Sixth Clinical Skills Competition for Interns came out. According to the rule, the winner of each award won the corresponding organization award and instructor award at the same time. At the award ceremony, the organizer also presented the prize to ten teachers who won the First Ye Rengao and Li Youji Couple Clinical Medicine Award for Outstanding Young and Middle-Aged Teachers, which affirmed their efforts in medical education and contributions to cultivating medical talents.
