On the afternoon of October 10th, Professor Alfred Sommer, Former Dean of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, paid a visit to SYSU. Vice President Li Mengfeng, Deputy Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center He Mingguang and Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange Zhang Qi met with the guest in the VIP Lounge of Zhongshan Building.

Vice President Li Mengfeng expressed a warm welcome to Professor Sommer and thanked him for his efforts in promoting the cooperation between SYSU and Johns Hopkins University. During the conversation, Vice President Li Mengfeng gave a brief introduction to the university, particularly highlighted the dominant disciplines in medical science of SYSU and discussed about the construction of School of Public Health. Professor Sommer put forward his ideas and suggestions on the prospects and focus of the development of School of Public Health and future disciplines.

In the morning, Professor Sommer, accompanied by Professor Liu Yizhi, Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center and Professor He Mingguang, Deputy Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, visited the center and had in-depth discussion about blindness prevention. In the afternoon, Professor Sommer delivered a lecture titled as “Improving Health —Environment and Policies Matter” at the School of Public Health on North Campus. Professor Ling Wenhua, Dean of School of Public Health and Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, hosted the lecture. Professor Sommer’s profound and humorous lecture benefited the students and teachers of School of Public Health a lot. The two sides had active interactions and discussed some issues of common concern.
